International Relations - 825 Words

International Relations (Research Paper Sample) Content: Name Tutor Course Date Effectiveness of EU conditionality principle in BiH: Europeanization vs. Ethno politics Overview of the research Bosnia is a country in South Eastern Europe that despite many efforts by the European Union still lags behind in many humanitarian international goals. Considering the fact that neighboring countries are far ahead in efforts to attain an EU membership, what could be the major fact hindering Bosnia from attaining such international goals? Are such reasons politically motivated or are they ingrained in the cultural beliefs of the country? Because most of its neighbors are already members of the European Union, the major hindrance to the EU membership could be the political leadership in Bosnia. The EU should seek alternative measures to ensure that Bosnia adopts the necessary laws to guarantee its involvement in the EU. This is because the conditionality principle in place does not seem to be producing any actual results. Positioning o f the research Several factors have contributed to the stagnation of the efforts of the European Union in impacting its values to Bosnia. Asle examines that â€Å"both the European Union and the Bosnian politicians have played a big role in the current impasse† (115). It is clear that the brand of politics practiced in Bosnia bundled with a rather complacent and divided European Union has led to the current state of Bosnia. Domm observes that, after the end of the war in Bosnia in 1995, the EU took a more active role in ensuring that human rights are respected in the region. After this war, the EU imposed the conditionality principle seeking to provide help only under strict guidelines that the Bosnians uphold certain accepted international principles. Tatham observes that however, â€Å"on a large scale, the conditionality principle has not produced the expected results† (89). Bosnia is still mostly an ethno political state with politicians serving their selfish inter ests under the guise of ethnicity as the perceived â€Å"Bosnian way of life†. The first major reason why the conditionality principle has not worked very well in Bosnia is the practiced brand of politics. Worthington observes that, â€Å"the Bosnian political atmosphere is characterized by ethnic group loyalty at the expense of anything else† (236). The politicians use this platform to popularize their selfish philosophies by belittling each other with no intention to develop. Caporaso observes that the â€Å"politicians use ethnicity and a perceived national heritage to control the EU by setting the terms under which they cooperate† (189). This works against the EU which is forced to conform to rules that in essence work against the principles that they  promote. The other reason that Bosnia seems to remain behind is the fact that the European Union in its resolve to Europeanize Bosnia does not present a united front. Christopher indicates that â€Å"close scrutiny of all the countries involved in the process and their efforts reveals a rather divided front with every country trying something different mostly with negative results† (301). This makes it difficult for the Bosnian people to take the process seriously. Rumford points out that the continued involvement of different EU countries in the internal operations of Bosnia can in part said to have contributed to the continued conflict in the country. In the ensuing confusion, the Bosnian authorities spread their own selfish interests at the expense of the country rendering Europeanization impossible. Noutcheva observes that â€Å"rather than focus on issues related to the European Union integration, politicians focus on emotion-appealing politics that border on incitement† (212). As a result, the EU has faced a lot of resistance from the locals who question the intentions of the EU member states. Domm points out that the politicians take advantage of the misperception to further advance their selfish interests (98). This only serves to increase inter-ethnic hatred and polarization consequently leading to increased conflict in the region. Boyce points out that the Bosnian politicans display ignorance to the plight of the European Union, and with no clear guidelines or repercussions, they get away with it. Lastly, the conditionality principle seems to fail in Bosnia since it introduces new ways that are the exact opposite to that of the politicians. Donais indicates that the EU integration project introduces foreign stringent measures which in essence challenge the norm in the Bosnian society that is based solely on ethnic domination and identity (150). Accepting such laws is seen as subduing to foreign powers that have vested interests in the country and their way of life. On the other hand, the European Union cannot relax such laws to favor the local mindset but instead responds by introducing even tougher laws. Mahmutehaji indicates that this alienates the local leaders who then decide to incite their followers against the whole EU project. Eralp points out that the local leaders are reluctant to adopt the stipulated laws since they threaten their dominance and take away their control (120). The Bosnian politicians, therefore, make it intentionally difficult to impose European Union policies in their country by putting in place measures that counter the EU mission. Exadaktylos and Rafaeli point out that â€Å"Bosnian politicians interpret the European Union standards as per their â€Å"Bosnian standards† which serve their own interests† (67). This makes it particularly difficult for the EU to make any progress in the country. Research design and methodology This research will revolve around identifying the major drawbacks to the conditionality principle in Bosnia by examining the current and past measures put in place. Past efforts and their results will be examined in detail to identify the values that th e Bosnian people or politicians may have rejected. To put things in greater perspective, the views of a single, popular political party will be sought. Singling out a political party will help provide factual information about the current state of events in the country. A popular political party will also provide the general consensus on the EU integration as well as the political atmosphere in Bosnia. Lastly, my research will also focus on individual views from Bosnian citizens. Such personal views will be collected using both quantitative and qualitative means. Data collection will involve online surveys or questionnaires and if possible, one on one interviews. Collecting information from the three sources above will provide a clear answer as to why the efforts of the European Un...

Into The Wild By Jon Krakauer - 1642 Words

Christopher McCandless may be one of the most intriguing characters in nonfiction literature. In Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless gives up all of his worldly possessions in order to move to Alaska and travel alone into the wilderness. Chris seemed to lead a very privileged life, as he came from a fairly well off family. Chris was intelligent, having graduated from Emory University with a degree in anthropology and history. There is much ambiguity as to why Chris suddenly decides to leave his family behind and travel by himself -- although it is clear that Chris’s initial belief was that the best way to live life was alone, surrounded by nature. The overarching question is whether Chris intentionally tried to kill himself when he traveled alone into the heart of Alaska. Those who believe he did contend that he did not make enough of an effort to extract himself from the negative situations in which he found himself. They argue that Chris felt that he was be trayed by his father, and that he tries to kill himself in order to get away from his family as a whole. Yet Chris McCandless did not in fact have a death wish, and his death was the result of his miscalculating how difficult living in the wild would actually be. This resulted from Chris’s excessive pride. His main motivation to go into the wild was to run far away from his family -- who by blinding him, indirectly caused him to miscalculate. Essay about Emily Dickinson and Walt Witman Clash - 803 Words

The definition of poetry, instead of becoming more selective and exact, has become a much more broad and open minded classification of literature. From Its beginnings in romanticist Puritan literature, to its more modernistic function on present society, poetry has become a way to blend the psychological side of human intellect, with the emotional side of human intuition and curiosity. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were two early poets from the late 19th century. Unlike Walt, Emily liked to write at home, she was a more secluded author who enjoyed to look out the window for inspiration. Walt on the other hand loved to travel. He found inspiration through nature and the diversity of thriving cultures throughout the world. Although†¦show more content†¦Here Whitman is speaking on how important it is for everyone to have their own individual voice. Also, Whitman doesnt speak for just the upper class. He uses jobs such as carpenter, plumber, and shoemaker. Jobs for people who really dont have the best things, or make the most money. Here Whitman speaks on expanding the horizon for society, giving everyone the same power, and equal voice. Not just the wealthy or more significant figures of society. Emily also writes on this idea in her poem â€Å"Success is Counted Sweetest†. It is in this poem she says, â€Å"Success is counted sweetest By those who neer succeed† (Dickinson, line 1). Here Dickinson is echoing the idea of having individualism in society. Their needs to be an equal distribution of power among the civilians so that the civilization will flourish. The lack of success in the lower class is caused by nothing less then a lack individualism among the lower class. Both Emily and Walt express discontent with the lack of individualism through the suffering of the lower class, shining light on the idea that without a sense of individualism, society is cast in the shadow of simplicity. In addition to writing about similar ideas, both E mily and Walt write about how they are unable to feel a connection with the divine realm and nature. Take Emilys â€Å"God Gave a Loaf to Every Bird† for example. Here she says, â€Å"God gave a loaf to every bird, But just a crumb to me†

Themain conflict of this book is the struggle to convince Lisas parents thatshe is ill and needs serious help. Her parents did not pay attention inthe beginning when Lisa started to act a little different. This is ratherunderstandable. Lisa was in school and pricked herself with a needle thatdrew blood. Many told Lisas stubborn parents that she needed a psychiatrist. They simply refused to accept the fact that their daughter was in needof anything. The moral of this story is basedon the illness of a girl and societys impact on her. It goes to show thatshe was helped and hurt at the same time. This passage caught my eye. Its a momentof shock and surprise caused by Lisas illness. This is a sudden outburstno one was prepared for. They handled it well under those circumstances. Lisa had shoved Elizabeth toward the dyingfire, and had jumped on her in one movement. She began hitting Elizabethsface, then changed her attack and began punching Elizabeth everywhere shecould her sides, her stomach, kicking at her legs, grabbing her by hehair. It was terrifying. .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 , .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .postImageUrl , .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 , .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:hover , .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:visited , .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:active { border:0!important; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:active , .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6 .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2c11e24b587a83c9f10d2020222b05b6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Atomic Bomb EssayThis is the list of ten vocabulary wordsthat I didnt know as I read Lisa Bright Dark. The Stock Market Essay Example For Students

The Stock Market Essay The Stock MarketHave you ever noticed how everyone thinks they know what is best for you? Everyone telling you what to do when you are the only one who knows what is the best for you. You maybe wondering what this is about, would you believe me if I told you it is about the stock market. Well it is, you may have thought that this had nothing to do with the stock market, but actually it is everything about the stock market. Why trust everybody else when you can invest yourself ? Develop your own system of trading and get started. This may raise another question, How can I find the right stock and buy them with out the assistance of a stock broker? In the following information I will take you through the process of finding hot stock picks and turning them into tremendous profits. Eventually you will even develop a trading system. First of all lets get the basic steps down before we move to the more advanced steps. The two main ways to make money in the stock market is from dived ends a nd buying low and selling high. To make great outrageous profits you will have to riley on buying low and selling high. This is very easy to say but very difficult to do. With dived ends you will receive a small percentage gain every quarter of the year, this helps with your profits but not much. To buy low and sell high you first have to find some stocks or funds. With this information and your motivation with stocks you can rule the world! O.K. maybe not the world but definitely your own portfolio. Morgan 2Now that you have the main concepts down we can move on and try to find some hot stocks. You never want to buy over bought stocks, because over bought stocks means that they are over valued. If you bought a over valued stock chances are that you bought high, and this may force you into selling low and take a loss. An easy way to get a round about feel for a stock to see if it is over or under valued is to look at its PE ratio. To calculate a PE ratio you take the price per share and divide it by the earnings per share and this will give you the PE ratio. Most of the time you dont even have to find out the p.e. ratio because It will be calculated before hand , so all you have to do is look at it. Many analysts like PE ratios under 60 or so, but it depends on the industry PE ratio also ( another figure that is pre calculated) (Frailey ,50). This is one of the most important figures of a stock. Try to avoid buying stocks with high PE ratios for long term holdings, even if its a good company. For example Cisco Systems is a fantastic company, it has split nine times in the last ten years, it has never disappointed Wall Street with earnings but with a PE ratio of 125 this stock is over valued. I would buy this stock at about fifty dollars a share with a PE ratio of about 60. Even the best companies get over valued. Buy stocks like Cisco on short term pull backs and sell them when they become over valued. We will write a custom essay on The Stock Market specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now It is important to develop some type of trading system that will protect your capital and extend your gains. I do not think there is one trading system out there that will apply to every stock, so what you must do is modify other systems and develop your own ( cut and paste ). The pyramid system is the most practical and useful trading system in the world. In this particular system you start off with about ten or so individual Morgan 3stocks that you think will do very well. There is no way around it, some stock will go up and some go down, face it. In this particular system you will sell your stocks that decline by ten percent. Now that you have liquidated some of your stocks you must have a place to put the money. You will then put that money into your stocks that are going up. Typically the stocks that start to do well will continue to do so and the ones that do bad willalso continue (Snell 4). You now have started your pyramid system. Selling your stocks is one of the most diffic ult things to do and often trading systems do not hold the correct answers to the question of when to sell your stock. This is where the modification comes in to play. If you followed this system you would sell when your stock declined by ten percent. This is a good time to sell if something fundamentally went wrong with the company, but if your stock was over sold it would have been a bad time to sell. For example, if you bought into Digital Equipment just before Compaq announced they were going to buy them out, you would have lost about ten percent. If you followed the trading system you would have sold and accepted a loss of ten percent. If you had realized that this particular stock was being over sold because this announcement was really nothing to worry about you would have held on to the stock. Well as a result of being over sold the stock shot up almost 100 percent in the next month, alone (Shimo 44). .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 , .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .postImageUrl , .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 , .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:hover , .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:visited , .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:active { border:0!important; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:active , .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0 .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4dd69449a6183eeb28190b4ccdaf76a0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Are Political Parties in Decline? EssayTo find these sold great companies you have to know what to look for in a stock. I believe that good companies will buy their own stock, so I like to look at the percentage of institutional shareholders of a company before I buy(Sheimo 26). When a company announces a stock buy back plan it often gives the stock a boost because it attracts other Morgan 4buyers as well as the employees of the company. A low PE ratio is always nice to see when looking for a stock to buy because it can mean that this particular stock has more room to the upside than a stock with a high PE ratio. When a stock has good earnings it will typically perform wel l through out the positive earning announcements. If you stay with the stocks that have good earnings it will lower your risk of loosing your capital and increase your chances of expanding your gains. If a stock has had a real nice performance in the last few quarters there is a chance that the stock might split. When a stock splits 2-for-1 the price is cut in half and the amount of shares you own will double. A stock split is almost all the time positive for stocks because this will often attract new buyers into the stock (Sheimo 89). When stocks get upgraded from brokerage firms with target prices to go along with them you will often find a sharp price run up. Some brokerage firms often project the companys earnings for the next year or so and this is a nice figure to go buy when researching for new stocks. A 25 percent of growth in a company is a nice growth percentage to see in a years time and it would make for a nice core holding in any portfolio. Now that you know what to loo k for in a stock lets learn about what is good to avoid in a stock. I become some what nervous when dealing with high PE ratio stocks for long term holdings. Stay away from stocks with PE ratios in the triple digits, it seems like it can be very easy to get burnt from these stocks especially on the long term aspect. I try to avoid stocks without earnings, but if there is profitability in the near future and revenue is strong I probably would not let that stand in my way of buying a stock. Never buy a cheap stock just because it is cheap (Sheimo 75), this is one mistake many Morgan 5beginning investors make. Just because you find a cheap stock does not mean that it is a good value. When looking for penny stocks you must do more research that just looking at the price, treat it as you would treat any other stock. Avoid heavy positions in thinly traded stocks(Sheimo 103). A thinly traded stock is considered to be a stock that has a volume of 10,000 or less a day. If you have stocks tha t are thinly traded there is a possibility that they might not trade every day and this might cause you to be forced to delay a sell and increase your losses in that particular stock. Be very careful when dealing with penny stocks, they are extremely volatile especially thinly traded stocks. If you have a serious interest in the stock market consider trading your own stocks and save a little bit of money. Remember the most basic rule buy low and sell high. To effectively use this very simple rule you must not panic, but you must spend endless time researching and looking for the next big stock while its still small. Never forget the basic rules of investing, because those rules are the rules that make the difference between the losers and the winners. Never follow a trading system to the point where you never consider exceptions and special situations. It is a good idea to research different trading systems to get a good feel of how to trade stocks on your own. Research a lot of different stocks and apply the basic rules of the stock market. .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 , .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .postImageUrl , .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 , .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:hover , .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:visited , .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:active { border:0!important; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:active , .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34 .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u18b778a03d22fbe74a32e96551b73e34:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gender Bias in the courtroom EssayBibliographyWorks CitedFrailey, Fred. â€Å"THE ODYSSEY† AS A HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL REPRESENTATION OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PEOPLE AND THE GODS AND GODDESSES OF MT. OLYMPUS The overall objective of this research paper is to identify and discuss â€Å"The Odyssey,† by Homer during his journey of Odysseus following the Fall of Troy. It was during this sojourn that Odysseus encounters various characters, and gods as previously indicated, which represent the essential source for this study including the primary source. It is true that the story is set within the context of the Trojan War, but it has been argued by scholars for a long time as to the factuality’s of the events in this story. Overall, it is a tale of adventure and homecoming after a long absence. It has even been debated whether or not the story took place during Greek times or pre-Greek times. Nevertheless, the story is alive with characters and adventures. I believe that more than anything, Homer’s â€Å"The Odyssey† is an exercise in the meaning of story telling through song and other aspects in â€Å"The Odyssey,† including lying and the lore, as I shall explain. Homer’s â€Å"The Odyssey,† is basically the story of the wanderings of Odysseus, but it is not in the form of a continuous narrative that this story is told. Clearly, â€Å"The Odyssey† incorporates materials that are older than the poem itself, and foremost among them in all likelihood was the tale of Odysseus’ wanderings immediately falling the Fall of Troy which is narrated by Odysseus at the banquet given in his honor by the Phaeaceans. This narration may well have constituted a separate poem or lie which was worked into a longer narrative by a later poet whom we know as Homer and his primary concern was not with the adventures of Odysseus but with his relationship with his wife and son. This later poet undoubtedly had to deal with the character of Odysseus as it was then current in folk lore - ... Free Essays on The Odyssey Free Essays on The Odyssey The Odyssey Odysseus, is an epic hero in "The Odyssey by Homer" which is an epic story that has been a significant piece of literature since it was first composed and will remain so for ages to come . One of the reasons it has so is because of the hero, Odysseus . Odysseus is one of the first Greek mythic heroes' renowned for his brain as well as his muscle . He is a man with an intelligent mind , he is also a man with outstanding bravery . We also shouldn't forget that he is a topnotch athlete which only adds to this seemingly insuperable character . It is no wonder why many people refer to Odysseus as a powerful mythic hero . Odysseus often hesitates before acting , since he uses his reason and gift to evaluate things . This patience is one of his most important additional attributes . This has saved him and his men many of times , and it can be seen in various instances throughout his travels such as when he disguised himself as a beggar when he finally reached Ithaca , waiting for the right moment to reveal himself. As great as he was , Odysseus still had some weaknesses that prolonged his voyage back to Ithaca . His most important weakness that he possess is that of his pride . Pride is good to have , but in Odysseus' case he had to much of it . This is clearly evident in the episode on the Cyclops' island . " Cyclops , if anyone asks you who it was that put out your eye , say it was the brave warrior Odysseus." ( P. 84 ) When Odysseus and his men are clearly safe away from ... Free Essays on The Odyssey â€Å"Tactical Trickery† Tactic, n. â€Å"An expedient for achieving a goal; a maneuver.† (American Heritage College Dictionary, co.2000) Tactics are important strategies that a person can devise and employ in order to earn what they strive for. In warfare as well as other â€Å"sticky situations†, tactics often prove to be a salvation. In his epic the Odyssey, Homer studies the use of tactics through three specific characters: Odysseus, Athena, and Penelope. Athena, the mythological Greek goddess of warfare, was known for her strategic planning. Aware of this, Homer highlights this fact through her actions in the Odyssey. In preparation for Odysseus’ visit to the Phaiakians, Athena disguises herself as a crier of the king, letting the people know that Odysseus, famous war hero, was coming. (289) Pouring â€Å"her grace out upon him,† Athena impresses the Phaiakians with Odysseus’ splendor. (290) She uses these tactics to ensure that the suspicious Phaiakian people will help Odysseus and his men. Later, Athena discloses her role to Odysseus. â€Å"†¦I who made the Phaiakians befriend you†¦I planned it so.† (368) Homer uses Athena’s tactics such as this to prove that the gods were on Odysseus’ side. Later, Athena also dresses Odysseus as a young man: â€Å"As for my change of skin, that is a charm Athena†¦uses as she will.† (405) This tactic is used to impress Telema chus of his heroic father. Again portraying Athena as a great tactician, Homer reminds the reader of her help during the Trojan war, when she helped Odysseus be providing him with the idea of the Trojan horse. (370) Though Athena provided the idea for the Trojan horse, Odysseus, known as the â€Å"Great Tactician† (395) actually carried out the plans for it. Working with Athena or alone, Odysseus often proved to be an excellent tactician. He also managed to save himself and some of his men from the cannibalistic Cyclops through a carefully ... Among them is Telemachos’ own journey from a child to a young man. In the book, Homer shows Telemachos’ change from a child who, lacking his father’s guidance, is not ready to rule a country to an adult who is prepared to take the crown passed down by his father. To better understand Telemachos, some general background of his life much be given. Odysseus, Telemachos’ father and the main character in The Odyssey, left for the Trojan War when his son was only an infant. The hero is gone for 20 years, and Telemachos is raised without a father. Also, while Odysseus was away undergoing the many trials that are described in The Odyssey, 108 suitors have descended upon his palace at Ithaca. Their aim is to convince Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, that her husband is dead and she must remarry. They also have wild parties every night, eat the livestock and food in the palace, and leave Odysseus’ home in disarray every night. Telemachos does not have the strength or the status to get rid of the powerful suitors. He feels that he cannot help his mother, who has promised that she will remarry once she is done weaving a burial shroud for her father-in-law. Penelope is smart, however, and she unravels her weaving every night so she is not yet forced to remarry. At this point, Athena, disguised as Mentor, wisely advises Telemachos to go in search of his father. The young man agrees, and he bravely calls the first assembly since Odysseus’ departure twenty years ago. Telemachos gives a compelling speech on why the suitors should leave his house, but it is evident that he still has a lot of maturing to do. At the end of his speech, â€Å"in hot anger [Telemachos] threw his staff to the ground, his eyes grown bright with tears.† (Book 2, line 86) When Telemachos loses control of his emotions, it is clear that he is still in many ways a child. Finally, Telemachos requests a ... Free Essays on The Odyssey An Honorable Hero? By: Ryan Volk Calvin Coolidge once said, â€Å"No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.† In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus is a character that gives nothing, and takes everything, and yet he is still viewed as an honorable man in many people’s eyes. However, Odysseus becomes a hero by telling tales of his past voyages and the miserable endings that they possess. For instance, as Odysseus is telling the Phaiakians about his treacherous voyage to the Laestrygonian land, he makes himself appear to be heroic in his actions, because he attempted to get his men out safely However, all of Odysseus’ actions are really performed in order to benefit Odysseus’ own well-being, not the well being of his crew. The tale that he tells to the Phaiakians is primarily told in order to make them perceive Odysseus as an honorable hero and also so they will aid him in his journey home. As Odysseus begins his tale, he explains to the Phaiakians, â€Å"Six whole days we rowed, six nights, nonstop† (Homer, 233: 88). By starting his melancholy tale with this statement, Odysseus is trying to prove to the Phaiakians that he has determination and bravery. Odysseus then continues his tale by saying, â€Å"I alone anchored my black ship outside† (Homer 233: 104), and â€Å"I tied her fast to the Cliffside† (Homer 233: 106), in order to gain honorable mention from the Phaiakians. It now appears that Odysseus not only possesses determination and bravery, but strength as well. At this point, the Phaiakians are on Odysseus’ side; after all, he is an honorable man. Then Odysseus continues his story and it is evident that the sole purpose of his â€Å"bravery† is to benefit him. Odysseus is not a hero who wants to save or help others; he is only in it for himself. A hero is any person, especially a man, admired for courage, nobility, and ... Free Essays on The Odyssey In The Odyssey written by Homer and translated by Robert Fagles, several themes are made evident, conceived by the nature of the time period, and customs of the Greek people. These molded and shaped the actual flow of events and outcomes of the poem. Beliefs of this characteristic were represented by the sheer reverence towards the gods and the humanities the Greek society exhibited, and are both deeply rooted within the story. In the intricate and well-developed plot of The Odyssey, Homer harmonized several subjects. One of these, was the quest of Telemachos, (titled "Telemachy") in correlation with the journey of his father. In this, he is developed from a childish, passive, and untested boy, to a young man preparing to stand by his fathers side. This is directly connected to the voyage of Odysseus, in that they both lead to the same finale, and are both stepping stones towards wisdom, manhood, and scholarship. Through these voyages certain parallels are drawn concerning Odysseus and Telemachos: the physical journeys, the mental preparations they have produced, and what their emotional status has resulted in. These all partake a immense role in the way the story is set up, stemming from the purpose of each character's journey, their personal challenges, and the difficulties that surround them. The story commences when Odysseus, a valiant hero of the Trojan war, journeys back home. Together with his courageous comrades, and a several vessels, he set sail for his homeland Ithaca. Fated to wander for a full ten years, Odysseus's ships were immediately blown to Thrace by a powerful storm. The expedition had begun. Upon this misfortune, he and his men started a raid on the land of the Cicones. However, this only provided them with temporary success. The Cicones had struck back and defeated a vast majority of Odysseus's crew. This was their first of many disastrous experiences to come. Storms then blew his ships to Libya and the la...
